Undelivered Mail And Incredible Building

Well aren’t I the lazy boy I haven’t put up a post in ages….

Well this week has been a bit stressful in getting a build ready so hopefully I can be excused.

If you are a /. reader you may have heard about a small start up called blue security who had a novel concept of fighting spam by sending thousands of un-subscribe emails to the perpetrators of the spam. I signed up for this free service and started fighting my spam.

However one of the leading spammers in the world didn’t like this idea much and started a campaign to stop the company. Bringing down websites such as tucows and typepad in the process. And eventually Blue Security threw up their hands and called it a day.

This has left me without a spam fighting technique and now with my email address well and trully in their address books. To the point now that I am receiving 2-5 emails a day saying that mail was undelivered so these quite insidious people are now using my address as a return address for the spam they send out. How Great!!!

On a note of the more professional nature we are trialling Xoreax Incredibuild, a distributed C++ build system for Visual Studio and it is going well. Nothing quite like your colleagues cpu idle cycles working for you instead of against.

Well I guess that is enough angst for one day.

Silence

Finally and end to my comment spam. Yesterday I added a plug-in to this blog on the comments adding a picture based security code to my website. Rather neat I think so no more spam for me!! Only real comments which is great. For now anyway…

This gets me to then end of my lunch break so back to hacking :)

Stop It

I tell you what I am sick to death of all the spam that is now getting put into the comments of my blog .

Every day it seems now that some spammer is running around all the active blogs and submitting ads for casino’s and pharmaceuticals to my blog.

Now I have better things to do than just delete your comment spam now sod off.

Telemarketers

Last Thursday (9th Sep) I had a sick day. I never realised having a listed number was so dangerous, I had three telemarketers call me. Wow so I have to have a phone line so I can get ADSL and pay the monthly phone line rental. Just so that I can be bombarded with calls from people trying to sell me something.

Well not really sell me anything it’s trying to save me money on my mortgage, but wait a minute I rent. This wouldn’t annoy me so much if they asked if I had a mortgage first, however this is not the case you have to go through about 2 minutes of spiel before you even get to say no thanks.

p The bigger problem with this is that they now use automatic dialing machines you have to sit there for a couple of seconds saying hello before someone is even there to talk back.

Oh well I suppose one day I’ll just go to cable internet and an IP phone and hopefully say goodbye to all this random call SPAM which is what it really is but we cannot install a spam filter to get rid of it :(.

One question remains we all know email spam doesn’t get a great reply rate. With a 1 in 100,000 response rate for an email Spam run to be profitable and 1 in 100 for Postal spam (figures from http://www.fee.org). I wonder would make a telephone spam run be effective? 1 in 50, 1 in 10, 1 in 5?

In the end I have to answer “Number withheld” calls because many legitimate businesses and people call me from withheld numbers and I really don’t want to take my number out of the phone book because I for one use the white pages often to find a phone number. I guess this is just one of those things that you have to deal with in the consumer driven world.
