A Truly Free Domain

Kitten with Money

If you have ever had a personal website, like me, you would know that your url to your website is important

However if you are also don’t like to pay for things that you can get for free, such as webhosting, you end up with a url that is not as nice as a top level domain.

There are some free domains at the top level but the never have the same feeling of a .net or .com.

So how did I get a .net without using my own money? Well I did but not through a credit card or check I did it by filling out online surveys. They offer cash out via paypal then all I needed was to buy the domain using the survey money.

I had enough in about 3 months just filling out surveys during my usual time on the web.

I ended up buying the domain through namecheap. They offer WhoIsGuard for free for the first year which is a great service so your personal details don’t show up in whois searches.

So it’s not entirely free but if you don’t value your time too much it’s not much work to do a few surveys and have a professional looking domain for your website.

And yes that is my cat! He is a year old now but still very cute, when I bought my last car the seller insisted on cash, I just couldn’t resist the photo opportunity.

Down again?

This week the blog went down again with “500 Internal Server Error” again. This time however I believe that the problem has been resolved for good this time however.

Back when I started this blog in 2003 with WordPress 1.0 there was no WYSIWYG editor so I wrote the first 18 months of posts in Textile before WordPress 2.0 was released with the TinyMCE editor for writing posts. And after that I couldn’t be bothered re-formatting them so I left the Textile plugin turned on and as it turns out it created the problems so hopefully it’s all finished with now. Thanks again to the support staff of Profusehost.

Internal Server Error

I have been experiencing troubles with wordpress recently causing “500 Internal Service” errors from apache, causing the php scripts to crash apache with a o so useful “segmentation fault” but all is well now. Thanks to John from profusehost for working so tirelessly on fixing this issue. You are still the greatest free webspace there is.

Cracking 1,000

After 27 Months (2 Years, 3 Months), 104 posts, a change of host, the addition of a gallery and many changes in theme. JBlog this month has had over 1,000 unique visitors.

Although it’s not really that large in the grand scheme of things but it’s significant to me :P.

There has been a large increase in traffic this month in particular since last month I received just over 600 unique visitors for July and most of the additional traffic seem to be coming from the main page of my provider profusehost. It has been linked from there since a week after the move from buildtolearn but they must be receiving a lot more hits too.

That’s all there is folks.

Downtime

Hey all. It’s been a while but hey buildtolean’s mysql server was down for about 5 days making blogging impossible and made me start to thing whether or not it is time to move to a more stable provider. Possibly one I would pay for. But hey I’m a tight arse and I’m not going to start paying for webspace just yet.

We upgraded or mobile phones on the weekend and jumped on the 3G bandwagon because Orange in Australia is now dissolving because of Telstra’s decision to dismantle their CDMA network in 2 years time.

But my new phone has a camera so now I can shoot any time I want without having to remember the digital camera. Here’s a shot of my new laptop running the program I am working on at the moment.

C# crazy

Hmmm I haven’t blogged in ages maybe it’s because I am busy or maybe just maybe nothing much interesting is happening in my life at the moment….. It’s probably the latter.

Well my sister in law had a baby boy yey.

I’m doing Advanced .NET Programming at uni this semester and I spend about 20 hours working on a assignment that is worth all of 1%. And along with Network Administration I am feeling a lot of “Bill love” as I call it. Just a tad too much MS(Microsoft) stuff for me but hey if it gets me out the uni door who cares.

Hmm that’s about it really really boring….

A year of posts

O my goodness I just realized that this blog has now been up for well over a year… And I missed the anniversary…. O well just keep on blogging.

TimeTracker is coming along it may become useful very soon

Hack Hack Hack

Well after over a month I am sitting down again writing an entry. I have been very busy with the Final Year Project, iteration 1 was a success and we are off on 2, 3 and 4.

Funny thing is that one of my friends was asked if she had a blog in an interview. Which she didn’t and promptly said on return that they needed someone more geeky someone like me :P. She ended up starting a blog though so that if it comes up again she could say YES.

And boy am I out of habit here I had to look up how to do an emphasis in textile very shabby indeed.

Anyhow time to hack some more.
